Cretaceous Walk
Project Overview
Cretaceous Walk
HC Dinosaur supplied 25 animatronic dinosaurs for Cretaceous Walk, a 1.2-kilometer outdoor trail inside a wildlife park near Madrid. The route carries visitors through Mediterranean woodland and scrub, past life-size reconstructions including a Tyrannosaurus rex ambush scene, a herd of Iguanodon, a pair of feathered Utahraptors, and a towering Sauroposeidon. Each unit is placed to create a natural sequence of reveals along the path, with motion-activated behavior, subtle ground fog, and themed interpretive signage in Spanish and English. HC Dinosaur handled terrain-specific foundation engineering, weatherproofing for a hot, dry continental climate, and a phased installation that kept the park fully open to visitors. The project included a five-year preventive maintenance agreement and an on-site spare parts inventory. The trail includes four shaded rest pavilions and a fossil-dig sand pit where younger guests can participate in a mock excavation under staff supervision. Local signage was produced bilingually, and the park reported strong repeat-visit rates in the trail's first two seasons.
Engineering Behind the Build
Challenges & Solutions
The park's rugged terrain limited access for cranes and large vehicles, so HC Dinosaur designed every unit to be transported in sections and assembled on site using hand-operated winches and custom trolleys. Summer temperatures and intense sun required heat-resistant materials and shaded positioning for electronics, while the dry climate demanded dust protection on all moving parts. Because the park remained open throughout installation, work was sequenced around visitor traffic, with temporary barriers and daily safety briefings. All 25 units passed commissioning ahead of the summer season.
